The Society pursues its objectives through a number of activities that are directed by the Council. The Council is elected by the full membership and has representation from major Committees and Associations.

Directs the affairs of the Society as entrusted by Council.
Organises the Society's scientific meetings.
Responsible for the initiation, promotion, facilitation of research into health and disease related to the broad field of gastroenterology, hepatology and related disorders.
Advises the Society on matters pertaining to promoting better health and understanding of gastrointestinal and liver disease in the community and among the general medical profession.
Responsible for co-ordinating the Society's comments and responses on clinical practice in the specialty.
Monitors the financial procedures.
Council will seek the appropriate expertise from within the membership as required.
Responsible for the organisation of Australian Gastroenterology Week (AGW) and any other society scientific meeting.

The Annual General Meeting of the Society will be held on Friday 24 October 2008 in Great Hall 2 of the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre Brisbane, Queensland, commencing at 1730.
Items for discussion at the AGM must be submitted in writing.
