GESA Membership

The Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA) is the peak body for the discipline of gastroenterology and hepatology in this country, with over 1100 members comprising medical graduates, scientists and trainees.

Objectives

  • Promote the advancement of knowledge, and maintain standards, in the practice of gastroenterology, hepatology and pancreatology.
  • Promote and foster research in basic and clinical science in these areas
  • Provide guidelines to relevant professional associations and colleges and to governments, on the training of clinicians and the practice of gastroenterology in Australia.

Structure

The Society is divided into Associations. Currently the following Associations make up the Society
  • Australian Liver Association
  • Australian Association of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

The Associations of the Society advise Council and other committees on matters relating to their respective sub-specialties. A Committee administers each Association and members elect their representatives.

A Council administers the peak body. The Council is made up of the Chair from each Association, Chairs of major committees and representatives elected by a vote of the full membership.

Prime responsibilities of the peak body are

  • Research
  • Administration
  • Scientific Meetings
  • Education
  • Policy

These responsibilities are undertaken by Standing Committees.

Activities of the Society include

  • Organising scientific meetings;
  • Fostering basic and clinical research programs through research grants, scholarships, fellowships and travel awards; and through assistance with collaborative study, design and data collection of multi-centre clinical trials, statistical aspects and reporting;
  • Conducting educational meetings and producing educational material relevant to the fields of gastroenterology for non-gastroenterological medical graduates and the public; and
  • Advising Government, semi-Government Committees or professional associations on regulatory matters, which relate to gastroenterology.

Privacy of Information Supplied

  • GESA complies with National Privacy Principles and Legislation
  • Personal information on members is collected, stored and will be disclosed only under the following conditions:
    • for purposes of processing membership application;
    • for purposes of identifying status as a member or applicant for membership;
    • for the purposes of processing an abstract submission;
    • for purposes of promoting scientific meetings; and
    • for any purpose deemed of interest to members by the Society.
    • Members are entitled to check the accuracy of their personal details at any time and update to endure that they are complete, accurate and up-to-date.

Authorisation

  • The Society lists contact details for current financial members on the Society website under Member access only. Members are requested to identify on the application form if they do not wish their information to appear in this directory.
  • Although Members may change or cancel authorisation at any time by putting their request in writing to the Society office, all members are given the opportunity to update this information on the annual subscription form.

Mail outs

  • From time to time the Society agrees to undertake a mail out for a Company to pass on relevant information to members. These mail outs are undertaken in the Society office therefore the members' details are not provided directly to the company.
  • Members may decline receipt of these mailouts by indicating on the application form or the annual subscription notice.

  • representation to Government on issues related to the practice of gastroenterology in Australia;
  • access to up-to-date information regarding gastroenterological issues through on line access to Journals relevant to the specialty. and GESA News, the official newsletter of the Society;
  • opportunity to network with peers;
  • eligibility to attend the AGM and have a say in Society activities; and
  • eligibility to stand for election.

Categories of Membership

Full Member (Full voting rights)

Medical Practitioner
Practising in the field of gastroenterology (medicine or surgery)
or a related discipline.

Advanced Trainee
Registered trainee in gastroenterology, hepatology or gastrointestinal
surgery. Supervisor must sign an endorsement

Science Graduate
Carrying out research in the field of gastroenterology with no clinical
practice.

Retired Member
No direct entry to this category. Members must apply to Council for a change of status.

Life Member
No direct entry to this category. An honour bestowed by Council.

Associate Member (no voting rights)

Medical Practitioner or other health professional who may not meet the criteria for ordinary membership may apply under this category.

Honorary Member (no voting rights)

members of the Society who, in the opinion of the Society Council, are of national or international eminence or have rendered exceptional service to the Society or to the science and practice of gastroenterology.

Fees & Subscriptions

Council sets the fees & subscriptions. GST is payable on all fees

The non-refundable application fee will be deducted from the initial subscription for successful applicants.

Notice Of Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the Society will be held on Friday 24 October 2008 in Great Hall 2 of the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre Brisbane, Queensland, commencing at 1730.

Items for discussion at the AGM must be submitted in writing.
