Here are answers to commonly asked questions about Liver Biopsy. Ask your doctor if you have additional questions or concerns.
A liver biopsy involves collecting a small sample of tissue the size of half a matchstick from your liver by passing a needle through the skin into your liver. The sample is then examined under a microscope.
The biopsy helps your doctor find out if you have liver disease, and if so, check the cause, find out how severe it is and follow the progress of the condition. Your doctor will use this information to choose the best treatment for you.
You will need to have a blood test to check that your blood clots normally.
You should not take blood thinning tablets, aspirin or arthritis tablets for a week before your liver biopsy. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure about any of the medications you currently take, including non-prescription ('over-the-counter') medications. Also check with your doctor if you need to fast before the biopsy.
