ASTRAZENECA Junior Travel Awards
Closing Dates: 31 July 2008 (for travel between 1 September - 31 March) 28 February 2009 (for travel between 1 April - 31 August)
Funding to travel to attend any national or international meeting outside Australia which is of particular relevance to the field of study of the applicant. Preference will be given to those applicants who also indicate that they will visit an overseas institution as part of their attendance at the overseas meeting.
This award is designed to assist in short visits to overseas institutions rather than for extended (greater than three months) study periods.
Number
Two awards will be offered in each six (6) monthly cycle. One award will be for travel to a meeting within Asia the other is open to all international meetings.
Value
Each award is for $AUD2,500
The award will be paid in full to applicants when they present a tax invoice and itinerary from their travel agent.
If the travel cost is less than the value of the award, the residual funds are to be used at the discretion of the recipient for general support.
Eligibility
The applicant is required to:
- Read, understand and agree to all the requirements listed in the 2008 Instruction booklet.
- Be a current financial member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia, defined as "confirmed as a financial member of the society at the time of applying for an award"; and
- Have shown a commitment to a career within Australia in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases or research into normal and disordered gastrointestinal function.
- Correctly fill in the application form and lodge with attachments prior to the closing date.
- Either, at the date of applying for the award;
- Be undertaking specialty clinical training in Gastroenterology, or
- Have completed specialty training in Gastroenterology no more than three (3) years previously, or
- Be enrolled in a higher degree, or
- Have submitted a higher degree no more than three (3) years previously.
- Submitted an abstract to the nominated meeting as a first author
- Not have been a previous recipient of this award.
Documentation
Applicants must supply;
- A full curriculum vitae;
- A one page description of the timetable for the program including the purpose of each of the planned activities; and
- Include the intended departure date for travel.
Selection Criteria
Major criteria shall be:
- Track record of applicant, with due regard to the applicant's career stage;
- Quality of the meeting and purpose of the proposed institutional visit and its appropriateness to the applicant's stated career plans.
- Undergraduate and postgraduate academic achievements and any factors that indicate the ability to make optimal use of the grant; and
- Demonstrated financial need. It is anticipated that top up funds from other sources will be required and where these have been obtained, applicants should include the amount.
Reporting
Recipients are expected to attend the next Australian Gastroenterology Week (AGW) following their return to Australia and supply a short report for the Society newsletter on the achievements of the trip.
