Research Awards

Distinguished Research Prize
Call for Nominations
Closing Date: 31 July 2008
Introduction
The Distinguished Research Prize is awarded in recognition of an outstanding contribution to research by a member of the Society.
Value of Prize
- $1,000
- Certificate
- State-of-the-Art presentation at Australian Gastroenterology Week.
Guidelines for the Award
- The nominee must be a member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia.
- The nominee's research contribution must have been recent and sustained over a
number of years. The results must have been published in recognised scientific journals.
The contribution may have been primarily as an individual who has done much of the
work, or as the leader of a productive team where the nominee provides the main
initiative and intellectual input.
- Preference will be given to a member whose research was carried out in Australia.
For overseas research to qualify, it should only be of a supportive nature, rather
than representing the major element of the contribution to research.
Mechanism of Nomination
The Society should be informed of the mechanism established for the award of the Prize
by way of the Society's Newsletter and website . Society members may write to the Honorary Secretary requesting that an individual be considered. The task of searching for suitable candidates should also be the responsibility of the Research Nominating Committee.
Mechanism of Selection
The Research Committee will consider candidates for the award and,
accompanied by appropriate documentation make a recommendation to Council.
If no contribution is adjudged by Council to be of sufficiently high standard an award will
not be made.
Method of Adjudication
The method of adjudication is as follows:
- Listing NHMRC awardees in the Society.
- Examining Society proceedings for contributions by individuals and/or teams.
- Monitoring of articles written by Australians over the last 4-5 years in major journals.
- A citation index.
- Generally maintaining an awareness of research contributions in Australia.
Once nominees are identified a short-list* should be compiled which for each individual includes the following:
- If possible, nominee's CV.
- A brief document from an independent expert in the field highlighting the major
research contribution made, how this has been achieved, the originality of the research,
it's relevance to gastroenterology and an evaluation of the international standing
of the nominee.
The Research Committee should then decide on the winner by a method of it's own choosing. The Chairperson of the Committee would then inform the President of the prefered recipient.
Timetable
Nominations for the award close on 31 July. Following approval by Council, the President shall offer the prize winner the award by letter in early August.. This timing should allow planning for a contribution by the recipient at Australian Gastroenterology Week later in the same year.
